I spent 12 years teaching children to read.
Then, my own son struggled.
What I figured out during that season, as a working mom with dinner to make and a toddler underfoot, became the tools I now use with families. It's why I get it in a way most coaches don't.
If reading time in your home feels tense, avoidant, or just stuck, you're not doing it wrong. You just need a simple, research-aligned plan and someone to show you how to use it.
My name is Anna Parker, founder of Joyful Reader Coach. I’m so happy you are here, ready to learn how to help your child become a confident, connected reader. If you’re wondering what this could look like for your family, I’d love to talk with you.
Why I Built Joyful Reader
When my son was in early elementary school, I received news that felt like a punch in the gut: he was reading below benchmark.
At home, I could see it too. He struggled to get through a single sentence. He avoided reading whenever possible. What should have felt steady and growing instead felt tense and fragile. Reading together had quietly become a battle, and we often walked away feeling defeated.
What made it harder was this. I had spent twelve years teaching dozens of children how to read in a Montessori classroom, under the mentorship of an Orton-Gillingham trained director. I knew how teaching reading worked.
And yet, in my own home, I had missed it.
I remember thinking, How could I let this happen?
That moment changed everything.
Instead of panicking, I went back to the fundamentals. The science of how children learn to read. The power of daily habit. The importance of protecting a child’s identity while strengthening skill.
From that season came three tools I now use with families:
• The Joyful Reader Framework
• The 10+10 Method
• The Joyful Reader Fluency Map
Within months, reading felt different in our home. The tension eased. Confidence grew. Eventually, he began choosing books on his own and couldn’t put them down. He grew to love reading.
Not because we forced it.
Because we built it.
And that is the work I now help other families do.
The Joyful Reader Toolbox
The three tools that turn reading battles into connection and confidence.
The Joyful Reader Framework
The Joyful Reader Framework is built on three pillars: Story, Skill, and Fun, all anchored by consistent routine and parent guidance.
Story builds language and connection through read-aloud time. Skill strengthens decoding and fluency so progress feels steady and measurable. Fun restores enjoyment, giving children space to choose books that spark laughter, curiosity, and confidence. When routine is steady and parents know exactly how to guide, reading shifts from tension to progress.
The 10 + 10 Method
The 10 + 10 Method is a simple, repeatable practice.
10 minutes of reading for skill.
10 minutes of reading for fun.
Reading for skill is the hard part. This is where we build reading muscles through intentional phonics and fluency practice grounded in the Science of Reading. Parents know exactly how to guide and support so skill strengthens steadily while stress and frustration stay manageable.
Reading for fun keeps things light and enjoyable. Children choose books that make them laugh and spark curiosity. Building reading stamina while remembering that reading is meant to feel good.
Short, consistent practice turns daily wins into lasting growth.
Joyful Reader Fluency Map
The Joyful Reader Fluency Map shows parents exactly how to guide their child through a difficult sentence.
When a child gets stuck, it can be hard to know when to help, when to wait, or what to say next. Without a clear approach, reading time can quickly turn tense for both parent and child.
The Fluency Map provides a simple path to follow. Parents learn how to support decoding, maintain the flow of the sentence, and keep frustration from building.
Instead of guessing what to do in the moment, you have a clear way to respond that keeps reading moving forward.
Joyful Reader Coaching
What It Is
Joyful Reader Coaching is personalized, one-on-one support for parents who want to help their child become a confident, connected reader without turning reading time into a daily battle.
Grounded in the Science of Reading and research on habit formation, the program helps families build simple, effective reading routines at home that strengthen both skill and confidence.
At the heart of the work is the Joyful Reader Toolbox:
The Joyful Reader Framework, which balances Story, Skill, and Fun so reading grows in a healthy, sustainable way.
The 10 + 10 Method, a simple daily rhythm of 10 minutes of focused skill practice followed by 10 minutes of reading for fun.
The Joyful Reader Fluency Map, a clear guide that shows parents exactly how to support their child when a sentence gets difficult.
Together, these tools create a practical plan you can use at home. You’ll know what to practice, how to respond when your child gets stuck, and how to build steady progress without turning reading into a source of stress.
And just as important, you’ll get to see your child grow because of the role you played.
Who It’s For
Joyful Reader Coaching is for families who want a clear structure, more confidence, and less stress around reading at home. Designed for real families with full lives who want reading time to feel purposeful, not overwhelming.
Parents of Emerging Readers (Kindergarten-1st)
For children who are just learning how to read and need:
Clear phonics foundations
A consistent, manageable routine
A path that shows reading is fun
Encouragement when reading starts to feel “hard”
This is about building early confidence before frustration takes root.
Parents of Struggling or Stalled Readers (1st–3rd)
For bright, capable children who:
Avoid reading or say “I hate it”
Guess at words instead of decoding
Read in a choppy, inconsistent way
Feel discouraged or behind
This is about rebuilding rhythm, strengthening skill, and restoring joy.
How it Works
1. Free Meet & Greet (15 minutes)
We start with a short conversation to understand your child, your current reading routine, and what’s feeling challenging. This helps us make sure the program is the right fit for your family.
2. Weekly Coaching Sessions
We meet for six one-on-one sessions where I guide you through the Joyful Reader Toolbox. You’ll learn how to use the Framework, the 10 + 10 Method, and the Fluency Map to support your child’s reading at home.
3. Practice at Home
Between sessions, you’ll use the tools in short daily routines that fit real family life. I’ll help you know exactly what to do, how to respond when your child gets stuck, and how to keep reading time calm and productive.
4. Steady Growth
Over time, small daily habits lead to stronger decoding, smoother reading, and growing confidence.
Sessions are available virtually over Zoom or in person locally in Asheville, NC.
A Teacher’s Perspective
“I had the privilege of teaching Anna’s oldest son in first grade. He began the year as a reluctant reader. Anna made it a goal to work with her son at home to help build his confidence and interest in reading with a consistent reading plan to support his learning.
This made a huge difference. By the end of the year he was reading on grade level and had developed a love for reading. I still see that today, as he is a confident reader and thriving. I believe that her program would be very beneficial for other parents as they read with their children at home.”
